“Home Automation” is simply, the automatic
performance of a task(s) based on an event.
Simple automation exists in nearly all homes in the form of a central
heating/air-conditioning system.
In these systems a thermostat continually monitors the temperature in the
home, when the temperature rises above or falls below a set point, an
“event” occurs. From this
“event” a respective “task” is performed - turn on/off heating or
air-conditioning.
Today, just about everything in the home can be
automated, from coffee pots to curtains. The power of today’s automation
systems allow us to centrally monitor events from various devices and issue
commands between them. This
means that a smoke detector activation can cause lights to turn-on
throughout the home. Or perhaps,
the kitchen shades opening at sunrise and closing 1 hour after sunset.
